ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Yambo (Enrico Novelli, 1874-1943) was an Italian writer, journalist, illustrator, cartoonist, and filmmaker born in Pisa. The son of actors Ermete Novelli and Lina Marazzi, he grew up amid theatrical culture but followed a literary and graphic path. At sixteen he published Dalla terra alle stelle in 1890, beginning a career marked by adventurous invention and a close union of words and drawings. After founding Il Marciapiede in 1892 and joining Milan's La Sera in 1894, Novelli moved to Florence in 1895. Due anni in velocipede, published in 1899, became one of his early major successes, blending Jules Verne-inspired travel fantasy with lively comic parody. He later created the illustrated monthly Il Pupazzetto di Yambo and contributed to numerous newspapers and periodicals. Yambo became especially associated with literature for young readers, fantastic voyages, pioneering Italian science fiction, theater, cinema, puppetry, and comics. His works often paired brisk adventure with irony and exuberant invention; later projects included the Ciuffettino stories, the silent film Un matrimonio interplanetario, and science-fiction comics for Topolino. He died in Florence on December 29, 1943.
