ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Saint Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) was an Italian mystic, author, and Dominican tertiary born Caterina Benincasa in Siena. Drawn to religious life from childhood, she joined the Mantellate, a community of lay Dominican women, and combined intense contemplation with practical service to the sick and poor. Catherine became an influential spiritual correspondent whose letters addressed clergy, rulers, religious communities, and private individuals. Her writing is direct and vivid, joining mystical imagery with urgent counsel on conscience, charity, and reform. Her principal works include an extensive body of letters and the Dialogue of Divine Providence, a major work of medieval spiritual literature. She died in Rome at age thirty-three and was later named a Doctor of the Church and Co-Patroness of Europe. Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (1873-1897), born Marie Françoise-Thérèse Martin in Alençon, France, was a French Carmelite nun and spiritual author. After moving with her family to Lisieux, she entered its Carmelite convent at fifteen and lived a brief, enclosed life centered on prayer, community duties, and trust in divine mercy. Her autobiographical manuscripts were published after her death as Story of a Soul. Their intimate, accessible spirituality became associated with her "little way," an approach emphasizing humility, confidence, and love expressed through ordinary acts. Thérèse died at twenty-four and was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1997.
