ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Ernest Thompson Seton (1860-1946) was an English-born Canadian-American author, wildlife artist, and naturalist whose close study of animals shaped both his art and his storytelling. Born in South Shields, England, he emigrated with his family to Canada in 1866 and grew up in Toronto, where encounters with the natural world fostered his lifelong devotion to wildlife. Seton studied art in Toronto and continued his training in London and Paris. During years spent in Manitoba, he combined field observation with drawing and scientific study, eventually serving as the province's government naturalist. His illustrated books presented animals as distinct individuals with intelligence, instincts, and dramatic lives. Wild Animals I Have Known, published in 1898, became his best-known collection, while his realistic animal narratives helped establish a distinctive tradition in Canadian literature. Beyond writing and illustration, Seton promoted conservation and outdoor education. He founded the Woodcraft Indians, later developed as the Woodcraft League, and played a formative role in the establishment of the Boy Scouts of America. In later life he settled near Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he established the Seton Institute. His enduring work joins careful natural history, expressive draftsmanship, and compassionate storytelling.
