ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Edgar Rice Burroughs (1875-1950) was an American author whose adventure fiction helped shape twentieth-century popular literature. Born in Chicago, he attended the Michigan Military Academy and briefly served with the Seventh United States Cavalry in Arizona before pursuing a succession of occupations that included cowboy, shopkeeper, railroad policeman, and gold miner. Burroughs began writing professionally in 1911 while struggling to support his family. His first published tale, Under the Moons of Mars, introduced the planetary-romance world later known as Barsoom. Tarzan of the Apes followed in magazine form in 1912 and as a book in 1914, establishing the character who would remain his most enduring creation. His fiction ranged across jungle adventure, science fiction, westerns, lost worlds, and historical romance. After moving to California, Burroughs purchased an estate that he renamed Tarzana Ranch; the surrounding community eventually adopted the name Tarzana. He formed Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. in 1923 to manage his writings and their adaptations. During World War II, he also worked as a correspondent in the Pacific. His energetic narratives, imaginative settings, and recurring themes of survival and self-reliance continue to define his literary legacy. Dario Betti (1891-1987) was a Florentine painter, engraver, woodcut artist, and illustrator. Active in Italian periodicals and children's publishing, he produced illustrations for Florence publishers including Bemporad and Marzocco and exhibited his graphic work at the Venice Biennale in 1930.
