Two framed works comprising a painting on canvas and a toned lithograph on paper. The painting presents a surreal figural composition in a muted gold, brown, gray and charcoal palette, with a large human face, elongated organic forms, a wooded passage and circular celestial motifs. It is housed in a narrow dark-painted frame. The lithograph depicts The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula and Her Companions, with the crowned saint and her attendants crowded into a boat amid armed figures. It is inscribed "J. Pilizotti cop." and "L. Forster's art. Anstalt lith.," identifying Giacomo Pilizotti as the copyist-lithographer, and bears the handwritten name "Martin Schoen," a historical form of Martin Schongauer's name. Presented under glass with a black mat and green-and-gilt frame.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Martin Schongauer (circa 1450-1491) was a German painter, draftsman and engraver associated with Colmar in the Upper Rhine region. Born into the family of goldsmith Caspar Schongauer, he developed an exceptional command of the burin while also training as a painter. His art joined the precise linear traditions of metalwork with the expressive figures, spatial depth and close observation found in Netherlandish painting. Schongauer worked primarily in Colmar, where his surviving Madonna of the Rose Garden demonstrates his gift for combining devotional tenderness with intricate natural detail. His engravings range from monumental religious narratives to saints, animals, heraldic subjects and designs for metalwork. Their controlled lines, rich tonal modeling and graceful drapery made his compositions widely known throughout Europe during his lifetime. Late in his career, Schongauer moved to Breisach, where he undertook a large Last Judgment fresco cycle for the cathedral and died in 1491. His portable prints carried his influence far beyond the Rhine Valley, shaping generations of painters, sculptors and printmakers. Albrecht Dürer traveled to Colmar hoping to meet him, arriving only after Schongauer's death, while the young Michelangelo later adapted his celebrated Temptation of Saint Anthony. Schongauer remains a defining master of late Gothic printmaking.
