ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Tomaso Chiuso was an Italian Catholic priest and ecclesiastical historian active in Turin during the later nineteenth century. He served as secretary to Lorenzo Gastaldi, bishop of Saluzzo and later archbishop of Turin, and was a canon of Turin's metropolitan cathedral. Scholarly literature also identifies him as Gastaldi's vicar general. These roles placed him close to the institutional life of the Piedmontese Church during a period of profound change in relations among church, state, and society. Chiuso's major historical undertaking was La Chiesa in Piemonte dal 1797 ai giorni nostri, issued in five volumes at Turin between 1887 and 1904. The work developed a broad account of Piedmontese ecclesiastical history across the Napoleonic era, the Risorgimento, and the formation of modern Italy. It remains a cited record of the region's religious history, distinguished by extensive historical detail and a firmly clerical perspective. His writings also included historical and biographical studies, as well as an Italian translation of writings by Saint Ambrose on virginity. Chiuso's legacy rests in the documentary breadth of his scholarship and his close connection to the cathedral, archiepiscopal administration, and Catholic intellectual culture of Turin.
