ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Susan Williams-Ellis (1918-2007) was a British artist, ceramic designer, and founder of Portmeirion Pottery. The daughter of architect Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and writer Amabel Williams-Ellis, she grew up amid the imaginative architecture, gardens, and coastal landscape of Portmeirion Village in North Wales. Her early artistic education included contact with Bernard and David Leach, followed by study at Chelsea School of Art under Henry Moore and Graham Sutherland.

After marrying Euan Cooper-Willis in 1945, Williams-Ellis moved to Wales and joined him in managing the village shop at Portmeirion. Their commercial and creative partnership led to the establishment of Portmeirion Pottery in 1960. As the company's principal designer for more than four decades, she combined practical forms with distinctive surface decoration, producing such influential patterns as Totem, Magic City, Magic Garden, and Botanic Garden.

Williams-Ellis introduced Pomona in 1982, continuing her enduring engagement with historic botanical illustration and the natural world. Her approach brought varied motifs together within coordinated table settings, departing from the convention that every piece in a service should match exactly. Working across ceramics, painting, illustration, and textiles, she sought to make thoughtfully designed objects accessible for everyday use. Her work remains closely associated with postwar British ceramic design and the creative identity of Portmeirion.
