A pastoral landscape on textured paper bearing the signature "J.W. Gozzard" at lower left. The composition depicts cattle standing in a broad stream beneath a softly rendered mountain, with slender birch trees and autumnal foliage lining the bank. Muted mauve, gold, green, and russet tones create an atmospheric rural scene. Presented under glass in a molded rustic-style frame with faux-bois decoration and raised corner accents.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
James Walter Gozzard (1861-1926) was a British painter born in Northchurch, Hertfordshire. Census and probate research traces his path from early clerical employment to a professional artistic career. His 1894 marriage record identified him as an artist, while later censuses recorded him as an artworker, painter, and painter-artist. He lived and worked in Luton and Harpenden before settling in Notting Hill, London. Gozzard worked in oils and watercolor, developing detailed landscapes and village scenes rooted in the British countryside. Quiet waterways, winding roads, rural buildings, animals, and figures engaged in everyday life recur throughout his compositions. His measured draftsmanship and atmospheric handling of light gave his work a gentle narrative quality. The clarity and careful finish of Gozzard's compositions made them particularly suitable for reproduction, and numerous works circulated as decorative prints. These widely distributed pastoral scenes preserved his romantic vision of rural Britain and helped establish the enduring familiarity of his imagery. He died in Kensington, London, on February 15, 1926.
