ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Ben Houstie (born 1960) is a Heiltsuk artist from Bella Bella, British Columbia, also known as Waglisla. His practice is rooted in the artistic traditions of his community and encompasses original paintings, limited-edition prints, carved cedar rattles, paddles, and miniature masks. His first painting was completed in 1977, followed by his first limited-edition prints in 1987. As a child in Alert Bay, Houstie watched master carver Mungo Martin work on a monumental totem pole. His early life also included attendance at St. Michael's residential school, and he has described art as a means of cultural connection and healing. Over the course of his career, he worked with artists including Cheryl Hall, Robert Hall, David Gladstone, and Beau Dick. In 1988, Houstie worked under Bill Reid, painting drums based on Reid's designs and twenty paddles for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. He later painted reconstructed works for The Transforming Image, a 2000 exhibition at the University of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology. His work carries Heiltsuk cultural forms into vividly colored, fluid compositions while maintaining a strong personal visual language.
