ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Arthur Leslie Harradine (1887-1965) was a British ceramic modeller whose graceful figures helped shape the character of Royal Doulton's celebrated HN series. Born in Clapham, London, he entered the Doulton Lambeth studios as a fifteen-year-old apprentice in 1902, training under established sculptors including George Tinworth and John Broad. He also attended evening classes at the Camberwell School of Art under sculptor Albert Toft.

Restless with factory routine, Harradine left Doulton after completing his apprenticeship and pursued an independent life that included farming in Hertfordshire and later in Saskatchewan, Canada. He continued modelling throughout these changes. During the First World War he served with a Canadian cavalry regiment in France and returned to England after being injured.

Harradine subsequently established himself as a freelance modeller, supplying Royal Doulton with designs from his own studios rather than working at the factory. His long association with the company produced expressive character studies, children and fashionable women distinguished by poised gestures, lively silhouettes and a strong sense of movement. Wind-swept skirts, layered costumes and delicately observed faces became hallmarks of his work.

He continued creating models for Royal Doulton into the 1950s, later living on Sark and in Spain. His figures remain closely associated with the elegance and narrative charm of twentieth-century British ceramic sculpture.
