A Royal Doulton glazed bone china figure titled Judith, model HN 2278, modelled by Mary Nicoll. The composition portrays a seated woman in a flowing yellow gown with dark green sash and sleeve bands, resting one hand on an ornate mauve pedestal. Brown hair, delicately painted facial features, and green-toned ground details complete the polychrome decoration. The underside bears the Royal Doulton lion-and-crown backstamp, title, model number, modeller's facsimile signature, and production inscriptions.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Mary Nicoll (1922-1974) was a British ceramic modeller best known for her work with Royal Doulton's celebrated HN figure range. She began freelancing for the company in the mid-1950s and became one of its principal figure designers, working within the Staffordshire pottery tradition centered on Burslem.

Nicoll was especially adept at character studies. Her figures encompassed sailors, street entertainers, historical types and gently observed scenes of everyday life, often distinguished by expressive poses and carefully rendered costume details. She also designed elegant female figures, demonstrating a range beyond the humorous and occupational subjects with which she is frequently associated.

Her modelling career was comparatively brief, but her output was substantial. Royal Doulton continued to introduce some of her designs after her death, reflecting the depth of models she created and the company's continued use of her work. Her designs remain recognizable within the HN series for their narrative clarity, warmth and close attention to human character.
