ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Plutarch (c. 45-c. 120 CE) was a Greek biographer, essayist, and Platonist philosopher born in Chaeronea, a town in Boeotia in central Greece. He studied philosophy in Athens under Ammonius and traveled within the Greek and Roman worlds, developing associations with prominent intellectual and political figures while maintaining close ties to his native city. His best-known work, the Parallel Lives, pairs distinguished Greek and Roman statesmen and military leaders. Rather than offering simple chronicles, Plutarch explored how temperament, choices, virtues, and failings shaped public lives. These vivid studies of character became enduring works of biography as well as important literary sources for the histories of Greece and Rome. Plutarch also wrote the diverse essays and dialogues collectively known as the Moralia, addressing ethics, religion, education, literature, natural philosophy, and domestic life. His philosophical outlook drew deeply upon Plato while engaging with the intellectual traditions of his own era. He also served as a priest of Apollo at Delphi, and the sanctuary's religious traditions informed several of his writings. The breadth of his interests and his gift for revealing character through telling details have secured his lasting place in classical literature and historical biography.
