Original landscape painting by Phillip Cantrell (1922-2000) depicting a wooded river or pond scene with slender trees framing the foreground, dense forest beyond the water, and bright yellow-green foliage illuminated through the center of the composition. The work features expressive brushwork and areas of pronounced impasto, particularly throughout the foreground and foliage. Signed Cantrell at lower left.

Phillip Cantrell was an American landscape painter born in Port Austin, Michigan. Biographical information associated with his work records that he spent several formative years in Paris before returning to Michigan, where the forests, waterways, rural scenery and changing seasons of his native region became recurring subjects in his paintings. Cantrell worked in several media and is particularly associated with atmospheric woodland and landscape compositions.

Presented in a black and gilt frame with a wide linen-textured liner and gilt inner border.
