An early 20th-century Austrian hanging electrical bell push by Peter Tereszczuk, sculpted as a young girl holding the cord while standing atop a spherical switch housing. The dark-patinated bronze assembly has a light-colored cylindrical push button and retains its textile-covered cord and curved metal hanging bracket. Signed P. Tereszczuk and bearing an AR foundry mark.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Peter Tereszczuk (1875-1963) was an Austrian sculptor of Galician, now Ukrainian, origin. Born in Wybudow in eastern Galicia, then part of Austria-Hungary, he settled in Vienna, where he died in 1963. He studied woodcarving and sculpture at Vienna's Kunstgewerbeschule from 1893 to 1899 under Hermann Klotz. From around 1900, Tereszczuk worked independently in Vienna, concentrating on small-scale bronze and chryselephantine sculpture. His figures frequently depict children and graceful women, modeled with naturalistic detail and an intimate narrative quality. His artistic language developed from the flowing forms of Jugendstil toward the refined elegance associated with Art Deco. Tereszczuk also brought sculpture into daily life through inkwells, desk accessories, lamps and bell pushes, incorporating practical mechanisms into imaginative figural compositions. He worked in proximity to Vienna's accomplished bronze foundries and established a foundry partnership with Ullmann. His compact decorative works preserve the inventive spirit of turn-of-the-century Vienna, where fine casting, expressive modeling and functional design were closely joined.
