ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Paul Émile Lecomte (1877-1950) was a French painter, watercolorist, etcher, and engraver born in Paris. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in the atelier of Fernand Cormon, receiving an academic foundation in drawing and composition while developing a lighter, more atmospheric approach to landscape. Lecomte built his career around the varied scenery of France, with particular attention to harbors, waterways, market towns, rural roads, and coastal life. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français during the early decades of the twentieth century, receiving a silver medal in 1920 and a gold medal in 1922. In 1921 he was appointed an official painter of the French Navy, a role closely aligned with his enduring interest in ports and maritime subjects. His landscapes combine orderly perspective with fluid handling and softly harmonized color. Whether working in paint, watercolor, or printmaking, Lecomte favored familiar places shaped by water, trees, architecture, and everyday activity. His calm observation of the French countryside and coast gives his work a distinctive balance of structure, light, and atmosphere.
