Pair of mid-century paintings signed "Gris", featuring colorful bird and botanical compositions painted in oil over mounted dried tobacco leaves. The natural veins, fibers and overlapping forms of the tobacco leaves remain visible beneath the painted imagery, creating the distinctive textured ground characteristic of these works.
The left painting depicts three birds arranged around a tree trunk and foliage, including a prominent red-headed green bird, with pink floral accents. The companion painting depicts three birds among dense green foliage and pale pink flowers.
Gris is associated with mid-century decorative paintings executed over dried tobacco leaves, with tropical birds and naturalistic subjects frequently appearing in known examples. Works of this type are commonly associated with the 1960s-1970s period.
Both works are signed "gris" at lower left and presented in matching decorative wood-tone frames with layered molding, dark inner borders and gold-tone trim.
