ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Mitsugi Shinran Kikuchi (1933-2023) was a Japanese Canadian artist and ikebana master whose work joined traditional Japanese aesthetics with the landscapes and natural life of his adopted country. Born in Hokkaido, Japan, he studied visual arts, sumi-e ink painting, the watercolor technique known as tarashikomi, and flower arrangement before immigrating to Canada in 1966. He initially worked in Ottawa as a federal government mapmaker and became a Canadian citizen in 1977. Kikuchi painted in several media, including sumi-e, nihonga, watercolor, and oils. Flowers, birds, wildlife, and Japanese and Canadian landscapes recur throughout his work. His delicately balanced compositions reflect his long involvement with ikebana, in which placement, open space, color, and the natural character of each element are central. He began teaching flower arrangement soon after arriving in Canada and helped establish the Ottawa chapter of the Ohara School of Ikebana. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Kikuchi exhibited regularly and became an important advocate for Japanese culture in Canada. He received the Japanese Foreign Minister's Commendation in 2002 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, in 2012. His paintings entered public and private collections internationally, including Canadian governmental and diplomatic collections. He remained closely associated with Ottawa until his death in 2023.
