ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Louis Icart (1888-1950) was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker whose elegant figurative work became closely associated with the Art Deco era. Born in Toulouse, he developed an early interest in drawing and the theater before moving to Paris in 1907. There he pursued painting, drawing, and printmaking as the final years of the Belle Époque gave way to a new modern visual culture. Icart worked with fashion studios and brought the refinement of fashion illustration into his fine-art compositions. His graceful line, delicate tonal modeling, and theatrical sensibility drew upon eighteenth-century French artists including Watteau, Boucher, and Fragonard. Rather than treating the fashionable figure as remote or static, he favored expressive women presented with wit, sensuality, and movement. After serving during the First World War, Icart became especially known for color etchings, drypoints, and aquatints. His work found a wide audience in Europe and the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, when his images of glamorous women embodied both Parisian sophistication and the playful spirit of Art Deco. He continued working in Paris until his death in 1950, leaving a distinctive body of graphic art celebrated for its fluid draftsmanship and romantic atmosphere.
