A pair of watercolor landscapes on paper by British Columbia artist Lorraine Mary Hawe. The portrait-format composition depicts a secluded cabin and tall evergreens amid blue-shadowed snow. The horizontal coastal scene portrays wooded islands, calm water and a distant boat beneath a clouded sky, rendered in subdued blue, green and gray washes. Each watercolor is signed "L M Hawe" at lower left and presented under glass with matting in a brown wood frame. Reverse inscriptions and labels identify the coastal view with Shoal Island or Shoal Islands at Crofton, British Columbia, and include an Arbutus Ridge Artists Association label naming Lorraine M. Hawe and the medium as watercolor.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Lorraine Mary Hawe is a Canadian artist associated with southern Vancouver Island and the Cowichan Valley. Born in Duncan, British Columbia, she developed an early interest in drawing and painting during her school years. She later studied watercolor through basic and advanced courses with Cim MacDonald, becoming particularly interested in the medium's fluid, unpredictable character and its possibilities for experimentation.

Hawe continued her development through workshops with established painters, including Jack Reid and Zoltan Szabo. Her work received an honourable mention at the 1987 Cowichan Valley spring art show. Working from a home studio at Arbutus Ridge in Cobble Hill, she became part of the region's active community of artists and artisans.

Although watercolor formed an important foundation of her practice, Hawe explored a broad range of materials and approaches. By 2015 her work encompassed watercolor, acrylic, collage and silk, with an increasing focus on acrylic mixed media. She participated in the Visions Art Studio Tour and other community arts activities, reflecting a practice rooted in experimentation and the landscapes and creative culture of Vancouver Island.
