Framed Isolabella advertising poster reproducing Leonetto Cappiello's 1913 design for the Milanese spirits company E. Isolabella & Figlio. A multicolored Harlequin dances against a black field amid a sweeping garland of liqueur bottles, with the brand name rendered in large yellow lettering below. The lower register bears the E. Isolabella & Figlio Milano emblem, a printed Cappiello signature, and printed references to the Paris firm Établissements Vercasson. Presented under glazing in a black frame with a gold-tone border.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Leonetto Cappiello (1875-1942) was an Italian-born artist, caricaturist, painter, and poster designer whose career unfolded largely in France. Born in Livorno, he was self-taught and began painting at an early age. He settled in Paris during the late 1890s, initially finding success through incisive caricatures contributed to illustrated journals including Le Rire, Le Sourire, and L'Assiette au Beurre. Cappiello entered poster design around 1900 and worked closely with the Paris printer-publisher Pierre Vercasson. Moving away from the densely detailed conventions of earlier advertising, he developed compositions built around a single animated figure, simplified forms, vivid color, and dramatic contrast. His characters-dancers, jesters, animals, and fantastical beings-often emerge from dark backgrounds with an immediacy suited to the quick pace of modern city life. His designs promoted food, beverages, automobiles, theaters, and household products across Europe. Cappiello later worked with the printer Devambez, exhibited internationally, designed theatrical sets and costumes, and received the Légion d'honneur. Naturalized as a French citizen, he remained closely connected to both Italian and French visual culture. His imaginative silhouettes, humor, and command of color helped transform commercial advertising into a distinctive branch of modern graphic art.
