ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Jacob Eiler Bang (1899-1965) was a Danish architect and designer whose career helped shape modern Scandinavian glass and decorative arts. Born in Frederiksberg, he trained as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1916 to 1921. His work on Kay Fisker's pavilion for the 1925 Paris exposition helped awaken his interest in industrial and applied design.

Bang joined Holmegaard Glassworks and became its artistic director in 1928. He championed a functionalist ideal in which household objects could be beautiful, durable, practical and accessible. His table services and art glass evolved from restrained classical forms toward confident modern designs, while his leadership helped establish a distinct identity for Danish glass. His work earned honors at international expositions in Barcelona, Brussels, Paris and New York.

After leaving Holmegaard in 1941, Bang worked across architecture, publishing and the applied arts. From 1944 to 1957 he designed faience for Schous Fabriker's Nymølle ceramic works, bringing his disciplined approach to Danish pottery. He returned to glass as artistic director of Kastrup Glassworks from 1957 until his death, creating colored and opaline designs aligned with postwar Danish modernism. His legacy rests on a thoughtful union of architectural order, utility and graceful form.
