This lot includes 'La Descendance de l'Homme' by Charles Darwin, first French edition published in 1872 by C. Reinwald & Cie, Paris. Featuring dark green cloth covers with gilt lettering and decorative tooling, Tomes I & II hold wood engravings. Translated by J.J. Moulinié with a preface by Carl Vogt. Notable for being the first French edition, this set includes Darwin's 24-page publisher's catalogue in Volume I, confirming its original composition. Item is as pictured.Item is as pictured. Period ink ownership signature/inscription to preliminary page, appearing to read "Moreau," "Moreay," or "Morey"; exact reading and identity remain unconfirmed. Given the book's French origin and first-edition status, the inscription may be of provenance interest if the former owner can be identified. Estimated Value C$400-800 without know the signature.
