ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Kiff Holland (born 1942) is a South African-born Canadian artist known for luminous paintings that explore the changing character of light and color. He received his formal training at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Johannesburg School of Art before immigrating to Canada in 1975. He settled in British Columbia, where the softer atmosphere and coastal landscape offered a new range of subjects and tonal effects. Working in watercolor, acrylic, and oil, Holland has painted landscapes, figures, flowers, vessels, and reflective glassware. His compositions often balance representational precision with passages of fluid color and carefully connected shadow. Influences associated with Impressionism and the Bauhaus can be found in his attention to structure, texture, and luminous color relationships. Holland became closely involved with the Canadian arts community as an exhibitor, teacher, and mentor. He served as president of the Federation of Canadian Artists and taught in the design and illustration program at Capilano College, now Capilano University, in North Vancouver. In 1992 he was elected a Signature Member of the American Watercolor Society. His longstanding fascination with illumination gives his work a distinctive clarity, transforming everyday objects and landscapes through atmosphere, reflection, and radiant color.
