ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Joe Thornbrugh (born 1948) is an American wildlife and landscape artist associated with Montana. His work concentrates on birds and the landscapes they inhabit, with waterfowl forming an especially important part of his artistic record. Sporting subjects, intimate bird studies, and scenes drawn from the northern outdoors recur throughout his paintings and published prints. Thornbrugh became closely connected with the tradition of state waterfowl-stamp art. His work was selected for the 1986 Montana Waterfowl Stamp, and additional Montana issues during the late 1990s and 2000 featured subjects including a golden retriever with mallards, gadwalls, and a Chesapeake Bay retriever with a mallard decoy. These commissions placed his detailed wildlife imagery within a program joining sporting art and habitat conservation. Across original paintings and limited-edition prints, Thornbrugh has portrayed ducks, geese, loons, hawks, owls, songbirds, and other wildlife. His compositions combine careful species description with quiet narrative settings, reflecting the enduring connection between wildlife, landscape, and outdoor life in the American West.
