ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Xavier Kegels is a Belgian bag designer and entrepreneur born in Antwerp, a city closely associated with European fashion and design. He entered the travel-accessories field during the 1980s and helped establish Kipling in 1987, developing practical bags for modern urban life. In 1993, Kegels founded Hedgren in Antwerp. He named the company for his grandmother, Elisabeth Hedgren, whose open-minded character and appreciation for useful, intuitive design became part of the brand's identity. As founder and head designer, Kegels emphasized a balance of functional organization, clean styling, and comfortable mobility. Frequent international travel, including longstanding connections with Hong Kong, exposed Kegels to both Eastern and Western design traditions. His work for Hedgren joined minimalist European form with compartments and carrying systems intended for commuters, business travelers, and everyday use. That union of understated appearance and thoughtful function remains central to the design story associated with his name.
