ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Fred Ken Knight (1934-2023) was an American artist whose long career connected the coastal communities of Southern California with the landscapes and culture of Maui. Born in New York, he moved with his family to the San Diego area as a child and later served four years in the United States Air Force. Encouraged to pursue art professionally, he undertook full-time study at the Coronado School of Fine Arts. Ken Knight established a studio and gallery on Prospect Street in La Jolla, overlooking La Jolla Cove, and taught art through the San Diego Community College District. His early career encompassed oil painting and abstraction as well as the watercolors for which he became especially recognized. His work ranged from architectural and landscape subjects to expressive studies of coastal light and island life. After first visiting Hawaii in 1976, Ken Knight settled on Maui with his wife, Anne, and their two sons. Village Galleries represented his work beginning in 1971, sustaining an association that continued for more than five decades. Through exhibitions, demonstrations, and artist-in-residence programs, he became closely woven into Maui's artistic community. His paintings are held in private collections internationally and in the permanent collection of The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua.
