Bonny Roberts, AFCA: A Comprehensive Biography
Bonny Roberts (frequently credited as B. Roberts) is a distinguished Canadian landscape and fine art painter based in British Columbia. Best known for her evocative depictions of the Pacific Northwest coastline, including her widely collected print *From Lions Bay*, Roberts is a long-standing Associate Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists (AFCA). Her decades-long career spans across genres-ranging from strict realism to expressive abstract art-and she is celebrated for her mastery of colour theory, light layering, and painting instruction.
### Early Career and West Coast Realism
Roberts spent a significant portion of her early artistic life living and working in BC's Lower Mainland. Immersed in the marine and mountainous typography of the Pacific Northwest, she dedicated her early studio work to hyper-realistic and impressionistic landscapes.
During this era, she captured the quintessential scenery of the Sea-to-Sky corridor and the Howe Sound. Her most famous commercial successes from this period include a series of limited-edition, hand-signed photolithographs, notably:
* **"From Lions Bay"**: A 295-run limited print capturing the iconic boulders, coastal arbutus/evergreen trees, and sweeping marine views of the Howe Sound village.
* **"November Lions"**: A atmospheric landscape depicting the famous twin peaks ("The Lions") overlooking Greater Vancouver.
* **Coastal Wildlife Series**: Accompanying watercolour studies focused on Pacific coastlines, regional seagulls, and great blue herons.
### Artistic Evolution: From Realism to the Abstract
While Roberts initially built a commercial footprint on "super-realism," her internal creative focus shifted toward abstract and non-objective painting styles. Roberts identifies heavily as a right-brained artist, stating that while her realistic landscapes come from structural technique, her abstracts come "directly from the heart."
Her abstract portfolio is distinct for its emotional resonance, created primarily by intentionally layering vibrant primary colours rather than relying on exact form. Roberts often notes to her peers and students that executing a successful abstract painting requires a stricter adherence to the core rules of composition and balance than representational painting does, because there is no literal subject matter to hide behind.
### Transition to the Okanagan and Similkameen Valleys
Seeking a change of pace and landscape, Roberts relocated from the coastal Lower Mainland to the dry, interior climate of the Similkameen Valley. She established her permanent home studio on Vanderlinde Drive in **Keremeos, British Columbia**.
The dramatic contrast of the interior landscape-moving from ocean vistas to desert sagebrush, orchards, and rugged canyon rock faces-breathed new life into her impressionistic colour palette.
### Exhibitions, Community Impact, and Teaching Legacy
Throughout her career, Roberts has been heavily involved in regional arts councils across Western Canada:
* **Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA)**: Achieving the "Associate" (AFCA) designation, she frequently contributed to juried gallery shows.
* **Solo Exhibitions**: Her work has been prominently featured in dedicated solo exhibitions throughout the South Okanagan, notably at the Oliver Art Gallery and The Art Gallery Osoyoos.
* **Regional Art Tours**: She remains an active participant in local cultural events, such as the regional South Okanagan Garden and Studio Art Tours.
* **Education**: Roberts is a highly respected instructor of painting composition and colour theory. Over the last two decades, she has taught hundreds of interior BC students how to "loosen" their style, conquer the fear of abstract design, and tap into raw, emotional colour palettes.
