ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Dorothy Francis (1923-2016) was a Canadian artist whose portraits and scenes grew from a lifelong interest in Indigenous communities and everyday life. Raised near Duck Lake, Saskatchewan, she encountered members of the local Cree community through her father's general store, experiences that helped shape the subjects to which she later returned as an artist. Francis moved to British Columbia in 1952 and studied at the Vancouver School of Art while raising five children in North Vancouver. She worked in watercolor, pastel, acrylic, oil, and other media, becoming particularly known for sensitive portrayals of Indigenous people and Inuit life. Her compositions often emphasized intimate gestures, expressive faces, and quiet moments of family and community. Her career encompassed hundreds of works, internationally distributed reproductions, and images selected for UNICEF greeting cards. She later lived in Qualicum Beach, where she supported the revitalization of The Old School House Arts Centre; one of its exhibition rooms was named the Dorothy Francis Gallery in recognition of her contribution. Francis returned to Vancouver in 2006 and continued her artistic life there until her death in 2016. Her work remains recognized for its gentle modeling, warm tonal harmonies, and close attention to human expression.
