ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Brian Kelley (born 1946) is an American-born Canadian artist and printmaker. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he earned a BFA in graphic arts from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 1968 and immigrated to Canada in 1970. Toronto became the center of a career encompassing printmaking, painting, drawing, teaching, and design. Kelley developed wide-ranging expertise in lithography, etching, woodcut, screenprinting, and other print processes. He taught printmaking, drawing, and bookbinding in Ontario and served as Open Studio's Director of Etching during the 1970s. A formative period of study in Japan in 1980 deepened his engagement with woodcut printing and Japanese paper, materials that continued to inform his work. Still lifes and landscapes form the heart of Kelley's imagery. His floral and tabletop compositions are distinguished by an impressionistic touch and a sensitive treatment of light and color, while his landscapes draw upon travel and a longstanding affinity for the outdoors. He has exhibited in Canada and internationally, and his work is represented in public and corporate collections including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and the National Museum in Warsaw. A longtime member of Toronto's Open Studio, Kelley has remained closely connected to Canadian printmaking through both his art and teaching.
