ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a Canadian Haida artist, goldsmith, carver, sculptor, printmaker, writer, broadcaster, mentor, and community activist. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, to a Haida mother and an American father of Scottish-German ancestry, he began exploring his Haida heritage as a young adult. Through his mother, Reid belonged to the Raven clan of T'aanuu, with the wolf among his family crests. Reid worked as a radio announcer and joined the CBC in Toronto, where he studied European goldsmithing and metalworking at the Ryerson Institute of Technology. His artistic development was also shaped by his maternal grandfather, Charles Gladstone, and by the legacy of the celebrated nineteenth-century Haida artist Charles Edenshaw. Reid combined close study of historic Haida works with exceptional technical discipline, adapting established design principles across jewelry, carving, sculpture, drawing, and serigraphy. After returning to the West Coast, Reid became a central figure in the renewal and wider recognition of Haida artistic traditions. His work ranged from finely wrought gold and silver jewelry to monumental sculptures, including The Raven and the First Men and The Spirit of Haida Gwaii. Across these varied forms, he brought Haida narratives and visual language into a distinctly modern artistic practice while maintaining a deep engagement with cultural history, craftsmanship, and community.
