ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Iljuwas Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a Canadian Haida artist born in Victoria, British Columbia. A member of the Raven-Wolf Clan, he traced his maternal heritage to T'aanuu on Haida Gwaii. As a young man, Reid worked in radio broadcasting and visited his ancestral community, where his grandfather Charles Gladstone introduced him to Haida art and the legacy of their celebrated relative, nineteenth-century artist Daxhiigang, or Charles Edenshaw. While employed by the CBC in Toronto, Reid studied European jewelry-making techniques at the Ryerson Institute of Technology and examined Northwest Coast collections at the Royal Ontario Museum. After returning to Vancouver, he united the precision of a goldsmith with his growing understanding of classical Haida design. His practice expanded from jewelry into drawing, printmaking, carving and monumental sculpture, combining disciplined formline composition with an intensely personal engagement with Haida stories and identity. Reid became an influential figure in the renewal and wider recognition of Northwest Coast art. His major public works include The Raven and the First Men, Skaana-Killer Whale, Chief of the Undersea World, and The Spirit of Haida Gwaii. His elegant treatment of animal and supernatural forms, particularly Raven, Bear and Killer Whale, remains central to his enduring artistic legacy.
