ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
William Ronald "Bill" Reid (1920-1998) was a Canadian artist of Haida heritage, born in Victoria, British Columbia. He began his professional life in radio broadcasting and joined the CBC in 1948. While working in Toronto, he studied European jewelry making at the Ryerson Institute of Technology and spent formative hours with Northwest Coast collections at the Royal Ontario Museum. After returning to Vancouver in 1952, Reid established a jewelry workshop and deepened his engagement with Haida art, history, and community. The work of earlier Haida masters, including his ancestor Daxhiigang, Charles Edenshaw, helped shape his understanding of traditional design. His practice expanded from finely worked gold and silver jewelry into wood and argillite carving, drawing, serigraphy, and monumental sculpture. He united the disciplined structure of Haida formline with a distinct modernist sensibility. Reid's major works include The Raven and the First Men, the canoe Loo Taas, and the monumental bronze Spirit of Haida Gwaii. His art brought ancestral narratives into contemporary public settings while maintaining close attention to balance, transformation, and relationships among human, animal, and supernatural beings. Reid also supported Haida cultural and environmental causes, and his work remains central to the story of Northwest Coast art in Canada.
