ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a Canadian artist of Haida heritage, born in Victoria, British Columbia, to a Haida mother and an American father. He began exploring his Haida ancestry in his early twenties, a lifelong journey that became central to his work. While employed as a CBC broadcaster in Toronto, he studied jewelry at the Ryerson Institute of Technology, gaining the exacting goldsmithing skills that shaped his approach across scales and materials. After returning to Vancouver, Reid immersed himself in historic Haida art and learned from ancestral works, including those of his great-great-uncle Charles Edenshaw. He worked in gold and silver jewelry, carving, printmaking, and sculpture, combining the discipline of Northwest Coast formline with a modernist sensibility. His career ranged from intimate personal adornment to monumental public works. Reid's best-known sculptures include The Raven and the First Men and the two monumental versions of The Spirit of Haida Gwaii. He was also a writer, broadcaster, mentor, and community activist. His work helped renew broad engagement with Haida visual traditions while retaining a distinctive individual voice rooted in craftsmanship, storytelling, and formal precision.
