ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Bert Dail Seabourn (1931-2022) was an American expressionist painter, printmaker, sculptor, and teacher whose long career became closely intertwined with Oklahoma's artistic life. Born in Redbarn, Texas, he spent formative years in Purcell, Oklahoma, where he sold his first cartoon while still in the eighth grade. During his service in the United States Navy, he worked as an artist and journalist, developing practical skills in drawing and visual communication. After leaving the Navy in 1955, Seabourn settled with his family in Oklahoma City. He studied at Oklahoma City University while working for Oklahoma Gas and Electric Company, eventually serving as an artist and art director. In 1978, after 23 years with the company, he devoted himself fully to studio art. Seabourn described his evolving approach as American Expressionism. His paintings moved fluidly between abstraction and recognizable imagery, with vigorous brushwork, layered surfaces, and recurring Native American subjects. He also worked in sculpture and printmaking and taught generations of artists. His honors included designation as a Master Artist by the Five Civilized Tribes Museum, an Oklahoma Governor's Arts Award, and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Oklahoma City University. His monumental bronze Wind Walker remains among his best-known public works.
