ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Ben Houstie (born 1960) is a Heiltsuk artist from Bella Bella, British Columbia, also known as Waglisla. Working within the artistic traditions of the Northwest Coast, he has developed a distinctive practice encompassing original paintings, limited-edition prints, carved cedar rattles and paddles, miniature masks, and jewelry. Houstie began painting at a young age. His first painting was completed in 1977, followed by his first limited-edition prints in 1987. In 1988, he worked under celebrated Haida artist Bill Reid, painting drums based on Reid's designs and 20 paddles for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. He later contributed painted reconstructions to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia for the 2000 exhibition "The Transforming Image." As a child at St. Michael's residential school in Alert Bay, Houstie encountered the work of master carver Mungo Martin. He has described art as a source of healing and cultural connection, informed by the work of his great-grandfather Daniel Houstie and by Heiltsuk artistic knowledge. His boldly organized compositions carry traditional forms into a deeply personal contemporary practice devoted to cultural continuity.
