ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Ben Houstie (born 1960) is a Heiltsuk artist from Bella Bella, also known as Waglisla, on the central coast of British Columbia. He began making art at a young age and works across original painting, limited-edition printmaking, cedar carving, rattles, paddles, and jewelry. His designs combine traditional Northwest Coast forms with a distinctive personal approach to line, color, movement, and culturally significant beings. Houstie completed his first painting in 1977 and issued his first limited-edition prints in 1987. In 1988, he worked under Bill Reid, painting drums from Reid's designs and twenty paddles for the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Ottawa. He has also worked with artists including Cheryl Hall, Robert Hall, David Gladstone, and Beau Dick. In 2000, Houstie painted reconstructed works for The Transforming Image exhibition at the University of British Columbia's Museum of Anthropology. He has described Northwest Coast art as a source of healing and cultural connection following his childhood experience at St. Michael's residential school in Alert Bay. Through paintings, carvings, and other media, his practice carries Heiltsuk artistic knowledge forward while retaining an individual sense of rhythm and expression.
