Ben Houstie's 2001 painting Humming Bird presents a profile bird rendered through bold, curving shapes and repeated feather forms. Black contours structure the composition, with red and blue fields providing concentrated color against the pale card-stock support. The lower margin is signed "Ben Houstie," titled and dated "Humming Bird 2001," and inscribed "Waglisla BC." The work is unframed.

ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Ben Houstie (born 1960) is a Heiltsuk artist from Bella Bella, also known as Waglisla, on the central coast of British Columbia. His practice encompasses original paintings, limited-edition prints, carved cedar rattles and paddles, along with work in precious metals. Bold color and Northwest Coast design traditions are central to his artistic language. Houstie began making art at a young age, first working on paper and canvas before expanding into printmaking and carving. While attending St. Michael's residential school in Alert Bay, he encountered the work of master carver Mungo Martin. Houstie has described art as a source of healing and cultural connection, shaped further by the designs of his great-grandfather, Daniel Houstie. In 1988, Houstie worked under Bill Reid, painting drums and paddles bearing Reid's designs for the Canadian Museum of Civilization. He later painted reconstructed works for the University of British Columbia Museum of Anthropology's 2000 exhibition The Transforming Image. Across these varied projects, Houstie has maintained a commitment to Heiltsuk visual culture while developing a recognizable personal approach marked by clear forms, vivid contrasts and enduring animal imagery.
