Two vintage Indonesian carved wood decorative pieces comprising an elaborate Balinese female mask and a figural water buffalo sculpture with two riders.
The Balinese mask depicts a serene female face beneath an elaborate pierced and deeply carved ceremonial-style headdress, with long cascading side ornaments and contrasting inlaid eyes. The refined facial features and ornate crown are characteristic of decorative woodcarving associated with Bali, Indonesia, particularly the carving traditions centered around Ubud and Mas. The mask is carved from a heavy, dense dark hardwood with a polished finish.
The accompanying sculpture depicts a recumbent or resting water buffalo with two seated figures, extensively carved with fine texturing to the animal's body, prominent curved horns and inset eyes. The buffalo is an important and frequently represented subject in Southeast Asian rural and folk art, reflecting its longstanding role in agricultural life.
Both pieces demonstrate detailed hand carving and dark, richly grained wood finishes and were likely produced as decorative folk art for the international market during the latter 20th century.
