The Artist:

Arnold Mikelson (1922-1984) was a master wood sculptor known for his fluid, ribbon-like forms and exceptional technical precision. Trained in Czechoslovakia and later appointed Chief Sculptor to the Danish Royal Court, he developed a distinctive sculptural language built on sweeping curves, interlocking movement, and meticulous hand-finishing. After immigrating to Canada in the 1960s, Mikelson established his studio in Surrey, British Columbia, where he became a leading figure in West Coast sculptural art.

Mikelson's work has been exhibited widely, including at the Arnold Mikelson Mind and Matter Gallery in Surrey, the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Burnaby Art Gallery, and in numerous private and public collections across North America and Europe. His sculptures continue to be sought after for their craftsmanship, expressive form, and the way they merge European carving traditions with a modern, organic sensibility.

"Exuberance" reflects Mikelson's hallmark style: a dynamic, upward-driven composition carved from a single block of wood, emphasizing movement, vitality, and the natural flow of the grain. It stands as a strong example of the sculptor's ability to transform raw material into a refined, expressive form.
