Toni Businger (1934-2019) was a Swiss stage and costume designer, painter, and visual artist known for his prolific international career in theatre and opera. Born in Wettingen, Switzerland, he trained briefly in literature before shifting to the visual and performing arts. After winning a poster competition in the Provence, he became assistant to renowned stage designer Teo Otto from 1956-1958, which launched his professional path.

Businger held early appointments at the Schauspielhaus Zürich (1957-1960) and the Städtische Bühnen Freiburg im Breisgau (1960-1962), producing designs for both opera and theatre. He later worked freelance for major institutions across Europe and North America, including the Opernhaus Zürich, Stadttheater Bern, Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Bregenzer Festspiele (1972-1981). His international breakthrough came with his acclaimed stage design for Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the San Francisco Opera in 1967. Over his career, he created more than 350 stage and costume designs for over 80 theatres worldwide.

His work extended beyond theatre into painting, drawing, book illustration, and graphic design, including emblem designs, festival installations, and public commissions. Businger's visual style blended theatrical architecture, painterly composition, and sculptural elements, reflecting his multidisciplinary approach. His artworks and preparatory drawings are held in Swiss collections, including the Kunstsammlung Wettingen.

Businger received multiple honors, including the Innerschweizer Kulturpreis in 1980 for his artistic versatility and creative excellence, and honorary citizenship of Wettingen in 2005. He remained deeply connected to his hometown throughout his life
