Artist Biography - Andrée Massot (Andrée Massot-Boutillier)
Born in Provence, France, Andrée Massot spent her youth in Africa, where her father served as a French government official. She received her early education there before leaving home at nineteen with the ambition to study art in Paris. Upon arriving in France, she enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts, where a pivotal encounter with Madame Matisse, wife of Henri Matisse, shaped the direction of her artistic life.
Massot lived with the Matisse family for four years, dividing her time between Aix-en-Provence and Paris. During this period she attended the School of Fine Arts in Aix, studied art history, and assisted in cataloguing the work of Henri Matisse. She also worked closely with Georges Duthuit, Matisse's son-in-law, supporting his research as an art critic and author. This immersion placed Massot within one of the most influential artistic households of the 20th century.
Following her time with the Matisse family, Massot designed clothing for boutiques in St. Tropez and Cannes, then traveled extensively through Spain, the Canary Islands, and Italy, studying frescoes - particularly those of Giotto. In 1952, she was awarded Le Prix Graniet by the city of Aix for one of her paintings.
When Henri Matisse died in 1954, Massot returned to Paris and assisted in completing one of his final gouache collages, marking a rare and intimate contribution to the closing chapter of Matisse's oeuvre.
Her connection to Canadian modernism began shortly afterward. Inspired by the work of Jean Paul Riopelle, Massot made several visits to Canada. In 1957, she completed a major commission, "Stations of the Cross," for the chapel of St. Thomas Seminary on Kilborn Avenue in Ottawa. She settled permanently in Montreal in 1963, marrying a French-Canadian businessman and opening a small downtown gallery where she continued to paint and design clothing.
Massot's exhibition history includes a joint showing with Georges Loranger at Ottawa's Blue Barn Gallery in January 1965, and a documented exhibition at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts from January 26 to March 3, 1968, where she appeared alongside Marcel Jean. She is listed in the Artists in Canada national index and is recognized for her role in mid-century Quebec modernism.
Artistic Lineage & Influence
Massot's artistic development is shaped by two major modernist lineages:
The Matisse Circle - through her years living with the Matisse family, assisting in cataloguing, studying art history, and contributing to Matisse's late work.
The Gleizes School - she later studied under Albert Gleizes, adopting his structural, geometric, and spiritual Cubist principles.
Her work blends these influences into a disciplined, rhythmic abstraction that bridges French modernism and Quebec's mid-century avant-garde.
Massot became an influential mentor herself, guiding younger artists including Daniel LeBlond, who spent five years in her studio during the 1990s and credits her with shaping his artistic direction.
Artwork & Historical Context (1959 Mixed-Media Work)
The 1959 piece reflects Massot's Gleizes-derived geometric abstraction: layered planes, structural rhythm, and a modernist spiritual sensibility. It was professionally framed by Little Blue Barn, one of Ottawa's most active contemporary art venues of the era.
During the 1950s-60s, Blue Barn Gallery exhibited early works by major Canadian artists including Victor Tolgesy, Gerald Trottier, James Boyd, David Partridge, Norman Takeuchi, Georges de Niverville, Harold Town, and Toni Onley, placing Massot within a significant cultural network.
Provenance: A.Y. Jackson
The shipping label confirms delivery to A.Y. Jackson at 192 MacLaren Street, his well-known ground-floor apartment and studio. Jackson - founding member of the Group of Seven - remained deeply engaged with Ottawa's art community during this period, supporting emerging modernists and maintaining active correspondence with artists.
A Massot work framed and delivered directly to Jackson represents a rare and meaningful provenance link between French-Quebec modernism and one of Canada's most iconic landscape painters.
