ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Alexandre Dumas père (1802-1870) was a French novelist and dramatist born in Villers-Cotterêts. He was the son of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, a celebrated general of the French Revolutionary era. After moving to Paris as a young man, Dumas worked in the household of the Duke of Orléans while pursuing the theater. His historical drama Henri III et sa cour brought him prominence in 1829 and established him within the French Romantic movement. Dumas became one of the defining masters of serialized fiction. Working with collaborators, most notably Auguste Maquet, he transformed episodes from European history into swiftly paced narratives rich in intrigue, loyalty, revenge, and adventure. The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, both launched during the 1840s, remain his best-known works and helped carry his reputation far beyond France. Travel, politics, and history continually nourished his writing. His journeys took him through Europe, Russia, the Caucasus, and the Mediterranean. Dumas developed a particularly strong connection with Italy and Naples, where he supported Giuseppe Garibaldi's cause and directed the newspaper L'Indipendente. His years in southern Italy inspired historical and literary works centered on the region. Dumas died near Dieppe in 1870; in 2002, his remains were transferred to the Panthéon in Paris in recognition of his enduring place in French literature.
