C. Alan "Bud" Johnson (1926-2013)
C. Alan "Bud" Johnson was a talented Alaskan sculptor and watercolourist, and the designer of the beloved Alaska Figurines. Together with his artist wife, he co-founded the C. Alan Johnson Co. in 1958, producing artwork for 48 years until his retirement in 2006 at the age of 80. Worthpoint
Working from his base in Alaska, Johnson became best known for his beautifully crafted, hand-painted ceramic figurines depicting Inuit Indigenous people - each piece individually signed, dated, numbered, and titled - capturing everyday moments of northern life including hunters, mothers, children, and community scenes. These figurines became cherished collectibles, prized for their intimate human detail and authentic spirit of Alaska Native life. Invaluable
Though primarily recognized for his figurines, Johnson also excelled as a painter. Original watercolours from his hand are rare in the public market, and he completed his last known painting in 2010, depicting the FV Thelma C, a historic Alaska salmon fishing boat. Worthpoint
His work has been featured by notable galleries and institutions including the Morean Arts Center. MutualArt
Market & Auction History
Johnson's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with his auction record standing at $2,300 USD (approximately CAD $3,150) for Whale Feast Scene, sold at Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals in 2023. Original watercolours are considerably rarer on the secondary market than his ceramic figurines and have historically commanded a strong premium given their scarcity - making an original signed watercolour one of the most desirable offerings from this artist's body of work. His work has appeared at Alaska Premier Auctions & Appraisals and John Moran Auctioneers, and is held in private collections across North America.
