ARTIST / CREATOR BIOGRAPHY
Frederic William Howay (1867-1943) was a Canadian historian, lawyer and jurist whose scholarship centered on British Columbia and the maritime history of the Pacific Northwest. Born near London, Ontario, he came west as a child and was educated in New Westminster. After teaching for several years, he studied law at Dalhousie University and returned to British Columbia, where he became a county court judge in 1907. Ethelbert Olaf Stuart Scholefield (1875-1919) was an English-born Canadian librarian, archivist and historian. He arrived in British Columbia with his family in 1887 and joined the Provincial Library as a young man. Scholefield succeeded R. E. Gosnell as Provincial Librarian and was appointed Provincial Archivist in 1910. His work strengthened the province's institutional collection of books and government records, including material documenting early settlement and Northwest Coast exploration. Howay and Scholefield collaborated on the multivolume British Columbia from the Earliest Times to the Present, combining narrative history with biographical records. Their work reflects an early twentieth-century effort to gather and organize the documentary history of a rapidly developing province. Howay continued writing and editing historical studies for decades, served in Canadian historical organizations and was elected president of the Royal Society of Canada for 1941-1942. Together, their scholarship and collecting helped preserve a substantial record of British Columbia's formative history.
